Christmas Arrived Early…

Color tools from Sherwin Williams
Color tools from Sherwin Williams

It looks like Christmas arrived a little early here at Nest Designs LLC. Thank you to Sherwin Williams for the awesome color products! I can’t wait to put them to use. The Josef Albers books, Interaction of Color, will get plenty of use over the next few years.

The color tools and prizes were sent to me for a color scheme that I submitted for the Sherwin Williams Pin You Perfect Palette Sweepstakes. To see my color palette entry, please visit my Pinterest page.

Pencil Installation

Centennial Chromagraph Installation at the University of Minnesota School of Architecture

This great sculpture, made from #2 pencils, was made to commemorate significant moments during the University of Minnesota’s 100 year history. While the materials that were used are not complex, the finished sculpture is very complex. For more information about this piece, or to read the entire article click here.

There is just something magical about this sculptural lighting exhibit at the Franklin Park Conservatory. I was lucky enough to visit the Conservatory while this installation, by Bruce Munro, is on display. Munro’s lighting sculptures capture the versatility of fiber optic lighting. The only limitation to this medium is the imagination. I definitely recommend viewing this show during the evening for the full affect.

Real World Design Week

Real World Design Week (RWDW) is here again! The American Society of Interior Designers promotes this event geared at pairing interior design students with design professionals. RWDW allows an interior design student to experience a typical day in the interior design field, by shadowing a professional for a day. Part of that experience can include; visiting working construction sites, attending client meetings, discussions with contractors and clients, looking for materials and really getting a sense of how projects come together. It also gives the student an opportunity to ask questions directly to a designer. I am really looking forward to having a student shadow me for a day again this year.

Greene County Kitchen

Nest Designs was hired by the homeowner’s to assist them with all of the interior design decisions for their new home. From the day we broke ground until the owners moved in, it was a fantastic project. The basic kitchen layout was drawn up by the architect. I then sourced out WoodMode cabinetry and worked directly with Cathy from Auer Kitchens and homeowner to create this space. I selected all of the finish products and the homeowner selected the Thermador appliances. The counter-tops are quartz, the sinks are silgranite, the faucets are Brizo, the island hood is from Thermador, the pendants are from TECH lighting, the wall sconce (in the background) is from Hubbardton Forge and we also used LED tape to light the clerestory. Diane at Premiere Lighting was integral in getting the right lighting products for the entire house. The builder, Ken Struewing, did a beautiful job putting all of these components together. This image shows a little more of the detail of the island. Cathy, of Auer Kitchens, and Nest Designs LLC worked closely with the homeowners to create this amazing island. The homeowners wanted bead board on the face (front side) of the island. The dual-height island adds an element of visual interest while giving the homeowners two separate work zones. The dual height also breaks up the visual weight of this large island. There is a bar sink on the island and a full sized kitchen sink (not pictured) in front of the window wall. The quartz counter-tops are spectacular in person. The back-splash is a simple subway tile with a soft gray grout. The grout color really ties the counter-tops and the back-splash together.
